Yuga Labs are the creators behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club, a collection of 10,000 Bored Apes.
To grow and develop their community, the BAYC decided to create another collection, the Mutant Ape Yacht Club. Yuga Labs airdropped 10,000 Mutant Vials to BAYC holders. There is an additional 10,000 pre-mutated Apes for those who want to join this exclusive club.
What is Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC)?
A MAYC is a mutated version of a Bored Ape NFT. This project is Yuga Lab’s third NFT collection and consists of 20,000 Mutant Apes. Minted on the Ethereum Blockchain, the collection marked the end of BAYC’s Roadmap 1.0.
How did people get these vials?
On August 27th 2021, BAYC tweeted this…
Yuga Labs kept the details of this project under wraps by hiding the launch date until the day before. They did this to avoid bots from unfairly securing considerable amounts of MAYCs.
Following this announcement, Yuga Labs airdropped 10,000 vials of Mutant Serums to BAYC holders.
Another 10,000 Mutant Apes were also distributed through a Dutch Auction, in which the price was 3 ETH ($9,732). This price slowly decreased during the mint. This auction allowed the community to dictate a fair starting price and better distribution. The collection sold out during the first hour of release and amassed around $90 million.
What are the serums and how do mutations work?
M1 is the most common Mutant Serum, with a total supply of 7,500. This serum changes the appearance of your ape with mutated traits depending on the particular serum.
M2 is a relatively uncommon serum, with only 2,492 in circulation.
Yuga Labs produced only 8 of these M3 (Mega Mutant Serum) serums, making them the rarest and most expensive. This mutation in terms of art is much more grotesque and unique than its counterparts.
Once a BAYC NFT has taken a vial such as the M2, you will not be able to apply another M2 Vial. Your Bored Ape can, however, still take M1 and M3 vials, as these are separate NFTs that will be created once ingested. When your Bored Ape has ingested a vial, it will be discarded and cannot be used again.
How to “Ape in”?
You have two options to “ape in.” One way is to purchase a serum from a secondary marketplace such as OpenSea.
- M1 Mutant Serum
- M2 Mutant Serum
- M3 Mega Mutant Serum
It is also possible to purchase Mutated Apes on the likes of OpenSea.
The potential of MAYC/ YUGA LABS
“Mutants are the last tier of the membership and mark the end of BAYC’s Roadmap 1.0. Going forward, BAYC’s focus would be adding utility and “member’s-only benefits”, primarily to Bored Apes, and then Mutants.”
Yuga Labs recently released its roadmap 2.0. It has no specific dates but shows a lot of promise that even more utilities will be given to holders. Their decision to build a community-focused business and give holders the opportunity to be involved in some of the decision-making has played an important role in their huge success.
On March 17th, Yuga Labs released APECoin, an ERC-20 token. They airdropped these coins to holders. The number of tokens each holder received varied depending on the type of NFT they owned.
The Otherside is another project that the team has announced. This project is described as a Metaverse platform that blends together Multiplayer Online Role Playing games (MMORPGS) and Web3-enabled Virtual Worlds. The Otherside will be compatible with Blue-Chip NFT projects that include Crypto Punks, MAYC, World of Women, and many more.
Why do people own MAYCs?
There is so much utility for holders, here are a few examples:
- Commercial rights for their NFTs allow holders to monetize their NFTs.
- Access to ApeCoin DAO. Holders can use their tokens to vote on changes and also purchase items within the real and digital world.
- Events are held internationally for holders to go to and network with other like-minded people.
They have also recently received $450 million in funding. These funds were expected to be used for a Metaverse project which was teased on Twitter.
Mutant Ape Celebrity Owners
- Former NBA Superstar Shaquille O’Neal
- Rapper Lil Baby
- Rapper Snoop Dogg
- DJ Steve Aoki
- Ethereum co-founder Taylor Gerring
Rapper Lil Baby’s Twitter profile picture is currently an M2 variant.
Ethereum co-founder Taylor Gerring purchased the M3 Mega Mutant Serum and applied this vial to his ape.
